'Heads & Tails'

An exhibition about thought and feelings

Derek Lomas & Gina Musa

Tuesday 5th to 16th April 2022
Open Daily 11am to 5pm
Private View - Tuesday 5th April 6 - 8pm

Heads and Tales is an exhibition about the stories we tell ourselves, which then affect our thoughts and feelings. Both Derek and Gina are inspired in their work by the use of emotion but use very different methods to express this. In this exhibition, they have paired their paintings as a way of evoking the viewer’s own thoughts and feelings more strongly and leading them, perhaps, to think about their own stories.

DEREK LOMAS -

DL

My pictures portray everyday emotions. I try to capture those rare moments when we can allow ourselves to fall in to a daydream, unaware of our surroundings.
I work in oil, charcoal and oil pastel.
I trained at The Medway college of Art and Design in Kent. I am a professional photographer and have been fortunate to work for Vogue, Chanel and other premium brands.
I live with my family in Colliers Wood.
I am a cat person. We are a slipper family but not a kitchen roll one.

GINA MUSA -

GM

I am a mixed-media artist and paint on wood panels and paper. Originally from Brighton, I have lived in London for the majority of my adult life. I have been, primarily, a ‘crafter’ and hadn’t painted since I was at school until I was inspired to do so in late 2020 following a major operation. In 2021 I undertook a 3-month intensive online course, with the American artist Nicholas Wilton and now paint several times a week.

My work often expresses my emotional reactions to everyday experiences and, in this exhibition most of my paintings have some kind of tale attached to them.

'The Silence of Swimming'

A Debut Solo Exhibition by

Tracey Elizabeth Downing

Tuesday 19th to 30th April 2022
Opening times Tues - Sat, 11am to 5pm
Private View Tuesday 19th April, 6 - 8.30pm

Show Down Event 30th April, 5.30 - 8.30pm

(please join Tracey for some drinks and nibbles on the last day of her show)

This debut solo exhibition is a collection of 24 paintings by Tracey Elizabeth Downing.
Based on a period of 10 months of swimming at Tooting Bec Lido, “The Silence of Swimming” evokes thoughts of calm quietness, of solitude. Swimming is important to the artist for these very reasons; it is a time to feel the breadth and depth of senses bodily and mentally. Noticing is key in Tracey’s approach to painting, random details, the flotsam and jetsam of life inform the semi abstract images ranging from the size of her hand span to her height. Of Tracey’s painting Artist, writer and mentor Phil King writes;

“Intimacy beckons and calls us into a private realm - warm immediacy feels very much the shared creation of your paintings and related to notions of a creative realm where conscious noticing and unconscious arrival tumble together.”

Tracey Elizabeth Downing is a contemporary painter who writes poems; graduating from Exeter College of Art in the 1980’s she went on to train as an Art Psychotherapist and has a Masters from Goldsmiths UCL 2009-2012.
Having worked as an NHS Art Psychotherapist for 7 years and in Special Education, now painting full time, her Art Psychotherapy plays an important part in her process. She now lives and works in Sutton, Surrey.

Artist Statement
“My intention is for my work is to be like small thoughts that travel far; informed by memory and ephemera that emerge in daily life and the relationship between them. Bodies of water above and below; clouds and places where I swim are important elements in my painting practice. I describe my work as semi-abstract, mostly oil on canvas. Recognisable imagery often emerges in the process of painting. I also write poems which I call ‘Moems’ which are moments of thought captured or on a bad day a cross between a moan and a poem.
Tracey has been an exhibiting member of Sprout Arts for 3 years and will be offering her “Enfolded” tiny concertina sketchbook collage workshop on both Thursdays during her exhibition.

Join artist Tracey Elizabeth Downing for her “Enfolded” workshop, exploring collage, image and text in tiny concertina sketchbooks.
The workshops will run on Thursday 21st and 28th April from 11:30 – 2:30 over lunch so bring a sandwich or salad, drinks provided.

'Covid Diaries'

A Celebration of Life

by Artist Michelle Baharier

Monday 22th to Saturday 27th November 2021
Open daily 11am to 5pm
Private View Tuesday 23rd November, 6:30pm to 8:30pm

Bring a Covid Poem to read on Saturday 27th November 4-6pm

ALL WELCOME!

Critically acclaimed multidisciplinary artist, poet and Slade alumni Michelle Baharier is displaying work inspired by her own experience of the pandemic. Covid Diaries presents one artist’s perspective, a snapshot in time of the unknown.

Michelle’s partner was hospitalised from covid before the first lockdown and she was forced to quarantine; faced with her partner’s severe illness, her own precarious mental health, a broken washing machine & leaking sink that no plumber would attend to, Michelle kept herself grounded by recording her experience with digital drawing, painting, photography, and by keeping a daily diary.

Michelle’s work expertly brings the human condition to life, letting our emotions flow with her bold use of palette and texture, reflecting our shared experience back at us.

The show includes commissioned portraits of artist Penny Pepper, actress & activist Liz Carr, disabled journalist & editor of the Disability News Service John Pring, disability rights campaigner and member of the House of Lords Baroness Jane Campbell, and live art, performance and video artist Katherine Araniello.

During her week at the gallery, Michelle will be working on handmade limited editions of her diary from March 2020. As the gallery will give her space, time & opportunity to explore her photos & drawings, collecting them into the first of many bookpieces.

The artist’s work exploring the range of human emotions is available for purchase; take home a new image for your living room and/or workspace. Michelle takes commissions and is on site to discuss your requirements.

In 2021 Michelle received awards from the Arts Council England Lottery Fund to create The Walkie Talkies – digital art pieces and a Developing Your Creative Practice grant which is supporting this exhibition.
