Bricolage Workshop at Sprout Arts

Saturday 28th October at 3 - 5pm £5 per person

Bricolage: (in art or literature) construction or creation from a diverse range of available things.

In this hands-on workshop with artist and printmaker Andrea Robinson we will explore how to use a variety of collage techniques and materials to develop ideas and find new meanings in the juxtaposition of found objects including text and image.

We’ll look at the techniques of artists who have worked with bricolage including Richard Rauschenberg, John Stezaker and Tom Phillips. There will be a chance to try out a range of techniques from cut-ups to blackouts and maybe even some Oulipo rules and games.

This workshop is for adults and young people with an interest in developing their own art ideas and projects through experiment and play - no previous drawing or collaging experience necessary. Participants are asked to bring materials they would like to work with (ie. magazines, postcards, photographs, wrapping paper, any other found materials). We will be cutting and sticking so please only bring things that you are happy to use in this way - if anything is precious, please bring a photocopy. We will have magazines, paper, glue and scissors for you to use, but do bring sketchbooks if you’d like to keep your collages and ideas in one place.

Cost £5. Places are limited so please book in advance.

Andrea Robinson is a visual artist working with printmaking, text, installation, performance and poetry. She is a founder member of print collective The Friday Group, a member of the Printmakers Council, and since 2009 her work has been exhibited at venues across London, and in Margate, Deal, Scarborough, Aldeburgh, Dublin, Berlin and at the European Courts of Justice in Luxembourg. Her prints and artist books are held in private collections in the UK, in Salford Zine Library and Archive and in the PMC archive at Scarborough Art Gallery and Museum.

Andrea’s work is inspired by found text, photographs, artefacts and family histories - birds often appear. Her prints combine a range of screen print techniques, including a hybrid form she calls ‘print-collage’, chine colle, photo-stencil and hand painted mono print.
