This exciting and diverse exhibition is by a group of ladies brought together by their passion for textile art and design. The work ranges from a lively exploration of dynamic colour and pattern through print, dye and stitch to the creation charming caricature dolls. Work also encompasses personal responses to the Syrian crisis through dyeing and fabric manipulation.

Yvonne Blackmore
I originally trained in glass-making and jewellery-making, and these continue to have an influence on my textile work in my love of transparency and detail. I often use sheer fabrics such as organza for a transparent effect, digitally printed or painted with acrylics and ink.
My work is often inspired by an interest in scientific ideas, especially astronomy and the quantum world which have fascinated me for many years.
Sue Owen
I taught Home Economics and Textiles for 30 years , after retirement I started to develop my own body of work. I enjoy the use of colour and texture, often altering fabrics and embellishing with stitch. Pieces may start with dyed or printed fabrics and find their own way into a finished piece. I am a great believer in the ‘happy accident’ and the materials themselves dictating an outcome.
Inspiration comes from many sources including natural forms, graphics and text and ideas drawn from my interest in genealogy.
Barbara Christie
Now that I have retired, I can revisit my childhood days where one of my favourite books was ‘Things to Make and Do’. I have since enjoyed many creative courses, workshops and classes, from art to needle felting and from quilting to free motion embroidery. I now seem to have settled into making dolls inspired by techniques learned from Jill Maas and Suzette Rugulo, I develop my characters from people I know or chance encounters.
I like to give at least one person a day a smile, and as it’s more of a challenge these days wearing face masks, i hope one of my dolls will make that happen instead.
With the encouragement and support from my friends and family, I now find myself exhibiting!
Liz Parry
Following a career teaching special needs I discovered my love of design after studying textiles on a day course at City Lit. I have since completed a two year advanced textiles course at City Lit culminating at an exhibition at Espacio Gallery in Shoreditch.
I enjoy exploring dynamic pattern and colour through various media such as paper weaving using hand coloured papers. I combine various printing techniques on paper and fabric including the use of digital print. I am currently exploring the technique of gelatine printing using paper stencils. i often use transparent media and combine layers to create interest and texture.
Inspiration comes from natural forms as well as geometry and graphic imagery. In this exhibition I am showing embroidered pieces inspired by rocks found on beaches in Devon and seed pods.
Ruth Blackford
I originally trained in textiles and graduated from Loughborough and Birmingham in the early 90’s. I have worked as a print and embroidery designer for fashion for a number of years. More recently, I have enjoyed working across the fields of illustration, printmaking and textile art.
My love of textiles remains strong, with colour, pattern and fabric playing an important role in much of what I do. I work to commissions as well as on my own projects, exhibit regularly and I also teach a range of art and design subjects in Further Education, and privately too.
Annette Herrington
My love of embroidery and textiles was inspired by a course at my local adult education college back in the early 90’s, from there I progressed to a BTEC Art Foundation course and ultimately to a BA Hons degree in printed Designs and Surface Decoration at the University of East London.
I have used my skills of varying techniques e.g felting, printing and recently pleating etc, and have exhibited my work at the NEC Birmingham, Tottenham College Cambridge, City Lit London and the Espacio Gallery London.
Yvonne Wilson
I have always enjoyed drawing and making things from an early age. I went to art college and later on I did an HND in Graphic Design at the London College of Printing. After several years working as a graphic designer, I stopped when I had my children. During that time I tried to find a place that I could go and explore the world of Textile Art In 2009 I joined a Textile Art course, taught by Louise Baldwin and there a whole new world was opened up to me. It has been a great journey and I have learnt so much. Trying to work independently is another challenge, which is why I’m pleased to be part of ‘Where to Next’. As a group we can support each other as we continue on our creative quest, and now we are holding our fist exhibition!
