Steve & Sue Owen @ The Sprout Gallery

Tuesday 5th to Saturday 16th September 2017
Open 11am to 4:30pm Tuesday to Saturday
Private View and Refreshments on Saturday 9th September, 5.30pm to 8.30pm

Steve and Sue’s work explores  the abstract quality  of rhythm,  texture, colour, and shape through print making and creative textiles. There are hints of figuration, with retro comic book and old graphic imagery often used as a starting point for screen prints. The more mundane the stimuli  for  the work the bigger the challenge for Steve!  Sue’s work often features a combination of print and stitch her work evolves according to the materials being used and she embraces the concept of a ‘happy accident’ in her work.

Sue Owen - Sue taught fashion and textiles for over 20 years before taking early retirement from teaching.  She now enjoys creating her own textile art using a variety of techniques.  She enjoys combining print with stitch and her work often displays layers of fabric and colour with the addition of hand and machine stitching.  A recent development has been to work with sheer fabrics, over printing and layering to create patterns and tonal interest in her work. Sue finds that her work develops spontaneously, growing and developing from her large collection of printed samples which undergo metamorphosis until they reach a natural conclusion.

Steve Owen - What may appear spontaneous in the work is often a consequence of much obliteration and reworking. Screen prints go through a series of transformations and developments until recognisable figurative imagery eventually appears. ‘There is a point along the scale somewhere between abstraction and figuration at which the finished painting rests. Finished paintings are not really recognisable as specific representations of places or events but neither are they abstract investigations of colour, shape and tone.’ Steve studied Fine Art Painting at Wimbledon School of Art before embarking on a career teaching Art in secondary schools and in further education. He has now returned to his original intended career path of painter and printmaker.

Jacqueline Merry Bernard

'Arboretum'

Tuesday 31st October to Saturday 11th November 2017
Open 11am to 5pm Tuesday to Saturday
Private View and Refreshments on Wednesday 1st November, 6pm to 8pm

An arboretum is an organic experiment, a place where imported trees may or may not thrive according to the nurture they receive. So it is with creative ideas emerging at their own pace and place. This exhibition began with the experience of a walk in woodlands interpreted through oil paintings, pastels and felt works together with work created over the past ten years in which a previously unrecognised form of a 'ghost tree' appeared and I have nurtured this encounter.

Jacqueline Merry Bernard has exhibited her paintings and felt works in Britain and France. She has been a member of South London Women Artists (SLWA)., London coordinator of the International Felt Association and works at Studio Voltaire London and her own studio in France. Her paintings and felt work have been influenced by architecture and landscape with a passionate interest in colour.
Recent work takes a hard look at a long creative career and the possibilities of new contexts through collage.

Emily's work is based on storytelling and visual thinking based on stories from the bible, folklore and recent residency trips in Scotland. In her work she draws from a variety of references from her surroundings, semi abstract and semi figurative in a painterly language. She is interested in capturing the sensations of these subjects, and exploring the expression and subjectivity of colour, inspired by Johannes Itten's teachings and explorations on the art of colour. Her work conjoins observation and the imagination through the interaction between conscious thought and the subconscious.

Emily is a London based artist, who recently graduated from the The Royal Drawing School 2015 and a previously from Brighton in Fine Art Painting in 2011, where she received the Nagoya University award for 'The Highly Commended: Outstanding artistic achievement at Brighton University Degree show'. TAT London Presents 'Reinvented with Love'

Tracey and Rachel will holding a small sculpture workshop Saturday 4th March free drop in workshop from 10am-midday and will be suitable for 5-12 years (some help will be needed for little hands!)

TAT London exhibition will continue until Saturday 4th March 2017

Open 9am to 5pm daily

After a successful stall at the Furzedown Festival Big Day Out, TAT (Tooting Artful Transformations) London Returns to Tooting, showcasing our new collection. We hate to see furniture looking down on its luck and headed towards landfill. We lovingly restore the piece whilst adding a contemporary twist. This collection we have been influenced by the mid century modern period and have complimented the collection with soft furnishings and unique collectible pieces.

Tracey Morant is an art teacher who in her spare time began renovating furniture, along with her other creative outlet of pottery. She loves to find new ways of reusing old things. She met Rachel 17 years ago whilst working in the travel industry and they have remained firm friends, and painting partners, ever since.

Rachel Young is a busy mum who spends a lot of time sanding down old furniture whilst the children are at school. She also works as production manager for the Secret Pillow Project, empowering women in India through training and work opportunities.

Gillian Foster - I am an ex primary school teacher, now working as a private tutor in Maths and English. Art and crafts have always been hobbies since childhood but I learnt watercolour painting with Kevin Williams in my forties. That inspired me to move into mixed media work. The crochet and knitting skills I learnt from my gran proved very useful too and I started to branch out into making dolls, brooches, throws etc. I like drawing people and working with sketch books. I've attended some life classes but am mainly self taught in this. Each year I do an art day with my yr 6 leavers and the work they can produce never fails to astound me. My exhibition includes a range of paintings, collages, knitted and crocheted corsages, papier mache figures, and boats made from driftwood and material found on the beach. I often upcycle discarded 'treasures' and am excited by found objects which I can think about to use in a different way. I hope the exhibits manifest some of the fun and enthusiasm I get from my hobby.

Kevin Williams' work has featured in many private collections both in the UK and abroad. He has been teaching drawing and watercolour painting in Adult Education for 16 years.
"After graduating from Twickenham School of Art I worked as a freelance illustrator and Graphic Designer for large organisations which included Nestle, Evian, Young's Seafoods and Superdrug. My paintings are usually in watercolour or gouache. I paint on location in all weathers. I use a loose energetic style, splattering and an occasional use of collage combined with more considered brushwork. I have recently renewed my interest in life drawing."

Kevin has held an Open studio Event for 20 years. Five of these years were part of Merton Arts Trail.

I hope that the works evoke my love of the British landscape and in some way captures the power and beauty of our surroundings. Landscape dominates this exhibition (although not entirely) and is represented through more literal representations and by surrealist influenced work. I hope you enjoy it.
