I love the British landscape and try to capture the reality, power, and beauty of our environment. Whether local or more far flung, landscape dominates this exhibition and is represented by Romantic Realist and Surrealist inspired responses.
Six years ago I decided to start exhibiting again, As a young artist I had exhibited, including the Royal Academy and worked for a renowned artist call Ana Maria Pacheco (Ana had a profound effect on how I approached my own work). However I had always loved teaching and embarked on a teaching career that lasted 34 years including 30 as Head of Art at Elliott (later APA) in Putney. I had continued producing art throughout this time and thought of myself as an artist of all genres, until I put up my first solo exhibition in 2015. It was then that I realised I am a landscape artist, whether urban, seascape, rural, mountainous, atmospheric etc. My work has been inspired by the spaces and environments we inhabit. It also became clear to me that there were two distinct ways in which I reflected those environments.
1. Romantic Realism
Paintings, photographs, drawings and etchings that are inspired by the power of the landscape. Often looking for how light and colour create atmosphere. Often from observation and/or from the photography that has become artwork in its own right.
2. Automatic Surrealism
A personal response to memories hopes and fears. These often start with doodles which incorporate the observed, the imagined, and use of colour to create mood. Our subconscious rules 97% of our actions and I wanted to represent this through my work.
This is my fourteenth exhibition since 2015, I hope you enjoy it.
