Born in Cheshire, Barrie studied at Edinburgh College of Art before moving into the advertising business, where his work in design provided structure and discipline to his artistic development in his formative years.

Winner of the Royds prize for painters working in advertising, his work now hangs in Public & Private Institutions – Ministries, Banks, Universities, Private Members Clubs, as well as in many businesses, hotels, hospitals, restaurants and private collections in USA - from Florida to California;  Europe - including UK, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland, France & Spain; plus in Canada, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

He has made a speciality of painting in series, of subjects and moods. Watercolour has long been his preferred medium rather than oils because it is faster, capturing the freshness, immediacy and excitement he gets out of a subject.

Exhibitions include:

UK:  Medici Gallery, London. Holland Gallery; London. Phillips Contemporary Art Sale & Auction, London.V & A Museum [Friends Room] London, Pump House Gallery, Battersea, London. The Wykeham Galleries, Stockbridge, Hants.

USA  Women's Travel Club, Miami, Florida.

Canada  Gable Gallery, Toronto.

Follow the Furzedown Fleece!

2nd - 21st August 2022

Follow the journey of transforming a raw fleece and making wool on a spinning wheel. Featuring textiles, tapestries and weaving skills.

The natural fleeces are locally sourced from city farms or from sheep farmers and breeders beyond London. Historically British wool was renowned for high quality. It is used for knitting and crochet work, weaving and carpets, clothing and upholstery. The journey of transforming a raw fleece through to usable yarn involves many different steps, many decisions and lots of skills, much specialised equipment, and a whole other vocabulary.

You can have a go yourself at all stages of these traditional activities. Friends from the Vauxhall City Farm Spinners and the London Guild of Spinners and Weavers will run drop-in sessions to try your hands at carding and drop spinning, workshops to learn and practice spinning with a wheel, tapestry weaving techniques, demonstrations of spinning, plying, carding and blending. There will be a fun 'Drop-spinning challenge' with a leaderboard and the chance to win a prize! Or just pop in to enjoy watching the traditional craft work by experienced and expert practitioners in spinning and weaving. There will also be a Tapestry exhibition on the theme of the over-use of plastic and recycling to view.

The workshops are on 4th, 10th and 17th of August. These need to be booked in advance through Sprout with a payment of £10, additional materials and equipment kits are payable on the day.

Thursday 4th August - Spinning Workshops:
An introduction to spinning with Penny Walsh, morning session for children and families, afternoon for adults.

Wednesday 10th August - Weaving workshops:
An introduction to spinning with Aruna Reddy, morning session for children and families, afternoon for adults.

Wednesday 17th August - Knitting and advanced spinning workshops:
Advanced spinning for adults in the morning. Knitting for children with Geraldine Kelly in the afternoon.

Please email Sprout for further details or to reserve your place

Sprout Year 2020

Looking back at 2020…
A very different year but still a creative and eventful one in Sprout. We didn't manage our 10 year birthday celebrations which were planned for May but hopefully we can celebrate in 2021. Considering we were closed for more than half the year, we crammed as much as possible in when we could!
We began the year with our Artists in residence in January followed by our winter Art Loan event, launched Jane’s Furzedown Book Swap initiative, created window displays to brighten up Moyser Road whilst we were closed and even showcased the Graveney Year 10 art students’ talent again in the summer.
We finally managed to host our annual Secret Postcard community fundraiser after rescheduling several times, and managed to host some of the scheduled artist exhibitions when we could open in the Autumn, albeit briefly.
We ended the year with our Christmas market, which unfortunately came to a halt sooner than planner when Tier 4 rules came into force, but we had good run and still had the chance to support our local artists, designers and makers again.
Thank you all for your continued support and wish you a happy and healthy New Year.

WORKSHOPS

Sproutbanner 250x900 cordage

Cordage Workshops with Geraldine Kelly

Thursday 23th May, 13th June & 11th July, 6:30 - 8:30pm

Geraldine Kelly follows up her 2023’s Artist in Residency with a series of evening workshops on Cordage (making string) and using it for simple basket construction, flat weaving, and other off-loom weaving techniques - everyone is welcome.

This year I look forward to making more cordage using a variety of different plant fibres. We should all become (more) proficient in the technique and start building up a stash of our own cordage. We will use the cordage we will make to create basketry projects, and explore techniques of construction, drawing on traditions from all round the world. I look forward to the summer evenings when we may even find the time to forage for more materials. Even more, I look forward to your company at Sprout and warmly welcome any plant fibres, ideas, or basketry techniques you may wish to share.

Once a month on Thursday evenings, 6.30 to 8.30pm. £5 per session on the door, spaces limited. To book your place, contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or phone 07737 200110

Creative Mending Workshop 21 March 2024
Creative Mending Workshops - inspired by Japanese hand-stitching

Thursdays 16 May, 20 June, 4 July, 6:30 - 8:30pm

Join Lucille Acevedo-Jones for a unique and hands-on experience at her five Creative Mending Workshops, where we will explore the art of Japanese hand-stitching and how we can be inspired to creatively mend our clothes.

The monthly workshops will provide a cosy and inspiring environment for participants to learn and practice this ancient craft. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced sewer, this workshop is open to all skill levels.

During the workshop, you will discover the secrets of traditional Japanese mending techniques, such as sashiko and boro. Lucille Acevedo-Jones will guide you through the process, providing tips and tricks to enhance your skills. Drawing upon her experience as a costume designer in Theatre, TV and film, she will guide you through the process, teaching you how to mend your own clothes using these beautiful and sustainable methods.

Bring along a favourite garment that needs a little TLC, and we'll provide all the necessary materials and tools. Get ready to unleash your creativity and give your clothes a new lease of life whilst saving clothing from landfill!

Book your spot now and embark on a journey of creativity and self-expression at this Creative Mending Workshop HERE!

Sproutbanner 250x900 hub

SPROUT HUB

Mondays 10am to 12 noon

HUB is an opportunity for Artist members to get together informally to exchange ideas, taking place monthly in Sprout on Monday mornings. We have been running for about one year.

The programme is fluid, we have been deciding what we want to do from month to month. A favourite meeting was when a number of painters brought along a painting they felt did not work, and the group discussed why and how it could be improved. Subsequently we have drawn and painted together, but always having time to discuss the current exhibition (often the artist(s) are present) and any exhibitions visited by those present. Another topic for discussion was what constituted art. We have a rolling "chair" to ensure it isn't dominated by any one member.

If you are interested in taking part just let us know so you go on the mailing list.

The only rule is that it should be a published poem by someone other than yourself. You can choose a poem from any time or place, let us know the title and author and translator in advance. Please note, if you want to share your own poetry work or read out your own poems, this is NOT the group for you.

The play-reading group meets in February April June August October and December in person at Sprout. We all take part and get to read a part. Texts are provided courtesy of the Inter-Library Loans Service so we all follow the same edition.

“We don’t read poems because, like bran flakes, they’re good for us; we read them because we love them – and if you haven’t found a poem you really love, keep looking and I am sure you will.” Erica Wagner
