Born in Cheshire, Barrie studied at Edinburgh College of Art before moving into the advertising business, where his work in design provided structure and discipline to his artistic development in his formative years.

Winner of the Royds prize for painters working in advertising, his work now hangs in Public & Private Institutions – Ministries, Banks, Universities, Private Members Clubs, as well as in many businesses, hotels, hospitals, restaurants and private collections in USA - from Florida to California;  Europe - including UK, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland, France & Spain; plus in Canada, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

He has made a speciality of painting in series, of subjects and moods. Watercolour has long been his preferred medium rather than oils because it is faster, capturing the freshness, immediacy and excitement he gets out of a subject.

Follow the Furzedown Fleece!

2nd - 21st August 2022

Follow the journey of transforming a raw fleece and making wool on a spinning wheel. Featuring textiles, tapestries and weaving skills.

The natural fleeces are locally sourced from city farms or from sheep farmers and breeders beyond London. Historically British wool was renowned for high quality. It is used for knitting and crochet work, weaving and carpets, clothing and upholstery. The journey of transforming a raw fleece through to usable yarn involves many different steps, many decisions and lots of skills, much specialised equipment, and a whole other vocabulary.

You can have a go yourself at all stages of these traditional activities. Friends from the Vauxhall City Farm Spinners and the London Guild of Spinners and Weavers will run drop-in sessions to try your hands at carding and drop spinning, workshops to learn and practice spinning with a wheel, tapestry weaving techniques, demonstrations of spinning, plying, carding and blending. There will be a fun 'Drop-spinning challenge' with a leaderboard and the chance to win a prize! Or just pop in to enjoy watching the traditional craft work by experienced and expert practitioners in spinning and weaving. There will also be a Tapestry exhibition on the theme of the over-use of plastic and recycling to view.

The workshops are on 4th, 10th and 17th of August. These need to be booked in advance through Sprout with a payment of £10, additional materials and equipment kits are payable on the day.
