An exhibition by Sophia Hughes and John Workman
Tuesday 25th February to 7th March 2020
Open Tuesday - Sunday 11am to 5pm
Private View Thursday 27th February 6-8pm
This is the second time that these two artists have exhibited together at Sprout Arts.
Sophia Hughes is concerned with place, catching remembered atmosphere in images of places she has visited. She takes liberties with reality in order to distil this feeling, which sometimes results in an awkward contrast between figurative and abstract. She employs any media available; sand, dust, house paint, chalk, filler, plastic . . .

Time is the theme of John Workman’s paintings. He presents a world of Victorian magic lanterns, old landscape paintings and floral patterns. Familiar images are painted onto wallpaper or lit up in photographic lightboxes.
I have worked in Valentia studios in Brixton for many years. My fine art practice consists of painting on various grounds, such as glass or wallpaper. I also do commissioned work in murals, illustration and design. My paintings are represented in collections in various countries but the majority of my exhibitions have been in England. At present my time is divided between painting and teaching. Some of my work can be seen here:
